John McCain and the Ptolemaic Universe

In the wake of protests in Iran, many Republicans have formed a chorus of critique, claiming that Obama has not done enough to position the United States on the side of the Iranian opposition. Leading the charge in this critique is John McCain. In blustering, chest-beating statements, he has accused Obama of not being “tough,” said he “has not done enough” and needs to “come out more strongly” against oppression in Iran. Following not far behind McCain in masculine swagger has been Lindsey Graham, who called the President “timid and …

Is John Ensign Avoiding His David Carradine Moment?

In the news surrounding Nevada Senator John Ensign’s admission of infidelity, the media has pounced on the very obvious hypocrisy of the GOP’s family values agenda.

But are glimmers of a much more complicated story being lost amid the furor and considerable eye-rolling over the Ensign scandal?

Is it possible that the two couples involved in the scandal might have engaged in a bit of consensual extra-marital fooling around? Is it possible they are just . . . kinky?

You will be relieved to learn that while the rest of the world is coming apart at the seams, the good folks at Mitt Romney’s Free and Strong America PAC are holding steady. A week ago Romney announced plans for an ESSAY CONTEST (how awesome it that?) to answer the question, in 250 words or less, “what does a free and strong America mean to you?” As you can see below, the lucky winner will receive a baseball, personally autographed by Mitt himself, an all-expenses paid trip to Boston to …

Gimme That Old-Time Bigotry!

In a recent tirade against Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, Pat Buchanan lamented that the new hypocrisy of affirmative action has supplanted the far clearer, more righteous “old bigotry” of days gone by. “One prefers the old bigotry,” Buchanan claims, because, “at least it was honest, and not, as Abraham Lincoln observed, adulterated ‘with the base alloy of hypocrisy.’”

Buchanan goes to a place where few conservatives dare to tread — waxing nostalgic about the good old days of institutional racism and sexism.

From the WTF?!? Department

Panasonic has released a new concept in remote controls. This new remote is made out of a flesh-like gel material and lies flaccid, peacefully “breathing” a pulse-like breath of inner light until the touch of a human hand excites it. With the, um, stroke of a human hand, the remote grows rigid and stiff, springs to life, ready to serve.
No information as to what kind of batteries this thing will take, but I guarantee you that whoever buys one will probably be fairly well stocked with options . . .

Obama and Gays: He’s Just Not That Into You

During his campaign, candidate Obama promised to be a “fierce advocate” for gay rights in the White House. Gay Americans opened their wallets to his cause in the anticipation that his election would actually turn into REAL policy changes. Gay voters and their straight allies thought that, in office, Obama would actually follow through with real policy issues, like the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marraige Act.
Via DailyKos, some of his more “fierce” promises from days gone by:

Note that at around 3:04, Obama argued that …

Concept of the Day: You’re Just Not That Special

It’s true. Scientists have proven, finally, that human existence is just not all that. A concept that scientists refer to as the “mediocrity principle” contends that whatever you think you have done that is special, unique, or profoundly meaningful, is, at best, mediocre, having been done countless times already in the infinite set of possibilities that existence presents. Awesome.

Can Life PLEASE Imitate Art?

The makers of Sims 3 announced last week that gay marriages are now possible in the latest version of the life simulation game. What I love most about this story is the picture that has been floating around with it. The image of two gay Sims getting hitched is so unostentatious. There’s no big production, no Sim halls rented out, no extended Sim families flew in from out-of-Sim-town to Sim fight with each other, no Sim caterers to argue over Sim fingerfood with. It’s just a couple of happy kids in the middle of a park with four Sim pals, a hippie-looking Sim officiant, some Sim guy who looks like a total stranger, and some big rocks around to witness.
